Cradled by the green-carpeted, wave-resembling ridges forming the Tygart Valley, Elkins, located in the West Virginia Highlands, represents down-home America. From the historic, red brick railroad depot, two barely visible, gravel-imbedded tracks stretch out of town, their direction indicated by the girder-resembling bridge ahead, and to the right, of them.

Proudly and powerfully led by the black Western Maryland number 82 and dark-blue Baltimore and Ohio number 6641 diesel engines, the six-car complement comprising the late-May New Tygart Flyer stood poised atop the slender rails next to the 1908 depot, the locomotives humming with deep, throaty, journey-anticipatory vibration on the hot, power blue morning. The passengers, most of whom consisted of school bus-deposited groups, progressively crowded the red-brick, track-level platform as the sun and temperature inched higher. The steel Pullman coaches, internally air conditioned, enticed the throng inside during the 1045 boarding, the passengers recollecting into smaller groups as they gravitated toward their assigned cars.

Although the railroad’s physical journey had been scheduled to depart at 1100, its historical one had begun more than a century ago, in 1880, and the “Western Maryland” and “Baltimore and Ohio” railroads, the names displayed by the current engines, had played crucial roles in it.

Principally hauling freight and coal, along with limited passenger service, the Western Maryland Railway itself, whose line entailed a six-year construction period beginning in 1906, had served the three states of Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, with two major track subdivisions: the Connellsville Subdivision, primarily engaging in easterly and westerly freight traffic flows, connected Cumberland, Maryland, with Connellsville, Pennsylvania, while the Thomas Subdivision, also originating in Cumberland, threaded its way through densely-forested, coal- and timber-rich West Virginia to Elkins.

The latter subdivision, however, had actually begun in 1880 when the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway had contemplated laying narrow-gauge track, but almost immediately elected to employ the more widely used standard gauge, for the purpose of providing access to the Allegheny Highlands’ abundant, hitherto untapped resources, itself sparking the establishment of several towns, inclusive of Davis, Thomas, Parsons, and Elkins.

The Coal and Iron Railway, established in 1899 to facilitate logging operations, originated in Elkins, boring through the Cheat Mountain Tunnel and following the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River and the West Fork of the Greenbrier River into Durbin, where it connected with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad’s Greenbrier Division. Although construction had been completed in 1903, the Western Maryland’s acquisition of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh only two years later resulted in the Coal and Iron Railway’s redesignation as the “Durbin Subdivision.”

Elkins, located at the mouth of the Leading Creek and Tygart Valley rivers, was named after investor and Senator Stephen B. Elkins, who, along with Senator Henry Gassaway Davis, had been instrumental in both the railroad’s and the town’s growth. Originating to serve the workforce needed to maintain and operate the line, the expanding town had once featured maintenance shops and “Wild Mary’s” freight yard, the staging area and western terminus of the many coal operations which had fanned out from the Elkins area, supported by a 900-strong team.

Threshold to some of the world’s richest timber and natural resources, and the transportation hub of the Appalachian Mountains, it became home of the Davis and Elkins College and Davis’s Graceland Inn summer residence, where invited guests would escape the Washington heat and humidity in order to enjoy its higher-elevation, cooler-climate location. Elkins became the Western Maryland Railway’s southwestern hub, its Thomas Subdivision connecting with its main line at Maryland Junction, south of Cumberland.

Although its service had been consistently ranked as fast, efficient, and of considerable quality, it significantly competed with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, but was fraught with several obstacles, including a proliferation of costly, high-maintenance tunnels and bridges; use of a single, as opposed to the B & O’s double, main line track; and service to only two major cities—namely, Baltimore and Cumberland.

The Baltimore and Ohio, having already established an affiliation with the Chesapeake and Ohio in 1962, petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) to gain control of the Western Maryland two years later, which it granted, but the line had continued to operate independently until 1972, at which time all three rail companies were merged into the Chessie System.

Further amalgamated with the Seaboard Coast Line and The Family Line ten years later, it briefly operated the Seaboard System, but was remorphed into the CSX Corporation, whose railroad division was designated “CSX Transportation,” in 1987.

The town of Elkins, whose growth had peaked in 1920, began a resource depletion-sparked decline and progressive rail service reduction until the tracks witnessed their last operation in 1959, thereafter lying barren and unused for some four decades.

In 1997, the Interstate Commerce Commission granted CSX Transportation permission to abandon the track it owned, but no longer used for coal carriage, below Elkins, which was subdivided into the still-active Elkins-Tygart Junction portion and the inactive Elkins-Bergoo section, provided that the West Virginia State Rail Authority could acquire both for a $6 million fee.

The line, encompassing some 140 miles of Elkins Division track and managed by the West Virginia Central Railroad, is now operated by the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad, a short-line company owned by John and Kathy Smith. Originating service on May 16, 1998 during the annual Cass Scenic Railroad railfan weekend, it initially operated from Durbin until the Randolph County Development Authority reconstructed the old Western Maryland bridge, allowing it to re-establish rail access to the Elkins train depot abandoned by CSX in 1992, once the location of its 22-acre, roundhouse-equipped yard.

The restored depot, site of the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad’s headquarters, is the departure point for three of its four excursion trains—the “New Tygart Flyer,” the “Cheat Mountain Salamander,” and the “Mountain Express Dinner Train”—while the “Durbin Rocket” continues to depart from the town of Durbin itself.

The Elkins depot once again serves as a railroad departure point and the town is once again the shopping, dining, hotel, and transportation hub of the east central Appalachian Mountains—but now for tourists.

A piercing whistle warned of the New Tygart Flyer’s imminent departure on that late-May day.

Nudged by the two diesel engines in pusher-mode, the train inched rearward as the car couplings accordioned into each other. Plying the tracks of the former Cheat Subdivision, which gently curved to the right, it trundled over the rust-colored, girder-resembling bridge and the green reflective surface of the river, the individual structures of Elkin’s historic district merging into motion, and paralleled several stationary coal cars until it briefly suspended its own travel.

Threading to the right on the switchback, and now pulled by its locomotives, the New Tygart Flyer departed the Elkin’s yard limits at milepost 30.0, plunging through dense vegetation, as if the tracks provided a parting path through it.

Negotiating the horseshoe-shaped Isner Loop two miles later, the snaking chain commenced its 2.8-percent graded ascent up Cheat Mountain.

Seemingly brushing the slanted dirt and shale rock faces, it following the arching, climbing rails, cradled by a deep ravine.

Reaching the summit at the Cheat Mountain Tunnel, the dual-locomotive, six-car chain plunged into the 1,717-foot-long, hand-carved, s-curved passage under the mountain’s ridge, the light-outlined portal representing its entrance progressively decreasing in size until it flicked out behind the last car, and the forest-green views through the side windows, as if shades had suddenly been pulled over them, transformed into blackness. The narrow rock tunnel provided as much clearance as a hand in a glove.

After reducing its momentum to a snail’s pace, the train reinitiated determined momentum. The layers of step-resembling shale rock showcased earth’s evolutionary, millennia-carved artistry, expressed in geological style.

Redescending into the Cheat River Valley at a two-percent graded rate, it reached the mountain’s base at the small community of Bowden. A short, out-of-service track siding passed by at milepost 38.4.

The cars lurched and swayed as they snaked behind and mimicked the Western Maryland and Baltimore and Ohio locomotives, their whistles cracking open the gentle, pre-summer morning with every road-crossing traverse, momentarily intercepting, and then paralleling, the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River.

Located in the eastern Allegheny Mountains, the 88.5-mile-long river itself, flowing through Monongahela National Forest and principally draining a 214-square-mile basin in rural and forested areas, is part of the mighty Mississippi by means of the Cheat, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers. Rising in north-central Pocahontas County at Thorny Flat, itself situated on 4,848-foot Cheat Mountain, it flows through the abandoned logging town of Spruce, location of its headwaters, before moving in a north-northeasterly direction through Randolph and Tucker Counties. Its valley is formed by Cheat Mountain in the west and Shavers Mountain in the east. Joining Black Fork at Parsons, the Shavers Fork forms the Cheat River at a 1,621-foot elevation.

The river’s prevalent, white-capped, mini-rapids, indicating their negotiation of the rocks and pebbles numbering in the hundreds of thousands encountered in their paths, represented obstacles the water’s forces painstakingly wore down into smooth, almost polished brown opals. Would that force ever succeed in reducing them to nonexistence? Which entity, or state, could then be considered the conqueror—the liquid or the solid?

The 1922-era, deluxe Pullman Palace parlor car in which I rode, the most luxurious of the train’s coaches, featured a wooden bar and pantry; individual tables and black vinyl chairs; wooden sidewall paneling; laced window curtains; ceiling fans; and red, floral-patterned carpeting.

A buffet lunch was served in the standard cars, but the parlor car offered more formal, menu and table service, and included a turkey, lettuce, and tomato croissant; a tri-color pasta salad; potato chips; apple pie a la mode; and iced tea. Catering had been provided by the Railyard Restaurant located in the historic Elkins Railyard, but entrees were made on board.

Cheat Mountain, draped in multiple shades of green, majestically rose in front of the locomotives. Bemis, a camping community of some 200, was represented by a scatter of farmhouses and mobile homes off the left side.

The track, sandwiched between Glady Fork on the left and Cheat Mountain on the right, re-elevated and passed over High Bridge, under which the glistening water appeared a motionless, velvet sheen surface. Curving over and between sand-colored boulders, the river descended under the trestle in an inverted s-pattern.

The screeching, snaking chain of steel cars, imitating their life-providing, parental engines, somehow appeared infinitesimal amidst the mountains, progressing like a thread through the eye of a needle, over a path veritably swallowed by the tree-carpeted peaks towering above them.

Decelerating to a crawl at 1230 and paralleling the 4,200-foot track siding at milepost 42.6, the New Tygart Flyer arrested its motion, the two diesel engines disconnecting from the parlor car and rounding the train to reattach themselves as pushers.

The parlor car itself, no longer obstructed by the locomotives, now became the lead coach, negotiating the high road bed whose gravel steeply angled downward.

A final screech, replaced by a thunderous roar only nature could ironically have made, indicated arrival at milepost 50.6 and the High Falls of Cheat, the New Tygart Flyer’s terminus, before it would later recommence its return journey.

Pouring, like a Herculean-sized faucet of white, unharnassed energy, the 18-foot-high, 150-foot-wide, horseshoe-shaped waterfall streamed over the flat step of rock to the collecting pool below it and thence into the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River.

The covered, wooden platform, which was barely long enough to stretch between a few seat rows of a single coach, somehow represented a link with humanity, while the track curving at 33 degrees toward the green confines of the isolating forest served as the path to that link. The air carried an inexhaustible spray of scented vegetation and the sound waves of the now-faint rushing water. The gray parlor car, currently considered the last in the chain, was visible to the left and represented the means by which that humanity link was carried, a lifeline forged once per day during the summer and only in one’s imagination during the winter.

The similarities were many at this remote, isolated, end-of-the-world location. The track formed a path to it. The river formed a path to it. The track carried life. The river carried life. The track paralleled and reflected the river, as if there were two parallel, but very close, worlds of different properties and forms.

The river continued its journey. And, with a brief lurch as the car couplings tightened, so, too, did the train. Only one location could represent both their destinations—their origins…

The Royal Scotsman is an outstanding luxury train of Scotland. A small train—just 36 passengers—it is fabulous for those who aspire for a more cherished, comfortable setting with gourmet, sumptous dining, wine-pairing and excellent service. Purely put, it is one of our preferred hotel trains. Especially great fun is the open-air observation place.

Accommodations

The five sleeping carriages offer sixteen twin and four single cabins, wonderfully planned with affluent inlaid wood. The twin compartments are big with two lower twin beds to be found in an “L” shape. A few beds are nearly six feet, seven inches long, strangely big for a train. Four compartments are purposely intended for single tourists so there is no single supplement––a scarcity on luxury trains. The washrooms are huge and are provided with private sink, toilet and shower.

All cabins are provided with dressing table, complete wardrobe, independently controlled heating, fans, opening windows and a service call button to ensure that yo get the best of service in th luxury train. The majority of people sleep like kittens on this train, because it halts at silent sidings at night.

Dining

Dining provisions are very comfortable. Meals are multi cuisine, candlelit affairs, made with the newest, premium local produce, seafoods and meats, and offered either in the usual dining car, “Victory,” with tiny tables for four or two; or in the subsequent dining car, “Raven,” which adjusts 20 travelers at three large tables. Appearance is stunning; service is welcoming and proficient with fine wines included.

Lounge Cars

At the end of the train is perchance the most unique carriage, the watching car. Initially made in 1960 by the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage and Wagon Company, the observation carriage came into use in 1961 as a unparalleled kitchen car. In 1989, the car was purchased from its owner, Michael Bailiss, and transformed it to its up to date luxury design, able to contentedly carry all 36 guests at one time. At the rear part of the train is a much loved spot: the open-air observation platform, for observing the beautiful scenes of the exquisite Scottish scenery.

One need only go as far as the Internet in order to find a variety of tours and travel Canada accordingly. One of the most popular ways to travel within Canada is the Canadian railway train system. Stretching from Montreal to Vancouver, this is the best way to see the most of Canada in the shortest amount of time.

Depending on interests located in specific areas within Canada, one might want to search a variety of blogs which offer information on various activities going on while in the area. This is in addition to the many lodging and restaurant reviews one can also find online. In addition, most area auto clubs or travel stores most likely carry brochures and additional information on traveling both inside and outside Canada.

Another way to see Canada and most other areas is by way of air. Many airlines offer air tours in most parts of Canada, even some remote areas of the Canadian Wilderness. Therefore, if one wishes to see Canada by air, one can call and visit the air tours which one finds interesting before making a final decision. Also, many air tours can also be found in Canadian tour books as well as the local phone books relating to the area in which one is visiting at the time.

Of course, when arriving in Canada, one always has the option of renting a vehicle, however one must first understand Canadian driving laws in order to drive in either city or in the back country. One might also want to check with forest rangers and the like if planning on driving and hiking in these areas. This is just a precaution so one can know their way back to the trail head before dark or where camping is legally provided in such back country if so desired or simply caught in the area without making it back to the trail head after dark.

Passports are also now required of all United States citizens entering Canada and returning home to the United States; Therefore, one need begin planning early enough to acquire a passport if one does not already have one accordingly. This is because passport applications can take up to sixty to ninety days to process before one receives their passport. However, if one requires an emergency passport, one can apply which may cut the wait time down to some extent, although one may have to pay a higher fee and provide an excellent reason for the expedited passport. Once paid for and approved however, a passport last quite a few years before one is required to renew same.

In planning, one need first decide their destination and date of travel. As based on where one is leaving from may or may not have both air, bus and train travel to and within the Canada. To this end, one might want to watch a travel related channel or videos of areas in Canada where one is thinking of traveling to get at least a little bit of insight into the area.

Two of the main areas in which tourists like to visit are Vancouver and Montreal. Each of these cities have more in the way of tourism than any others in the Canadian provinces and are therefore generally a bit more pricey with regards to food and Canadian relics in gift shops. Both cities also offer a great deal of entertainment. However, most events related to tourism in Canada are generally only open in late May through early September.

As expected, with the Olympic Games in Vancouver in February 2010, travel today is much higher a price than normal in this region of Canada. This is because as hotels book up, the rates tend to increase when the hotel reaches a limited number of rooms available. Therefore, if one is going to the Olympic Games this year, one need make their reservation as quickly as possible to assure accommodations are still available.

Also, if one is not attending the Olympic Games and planning on visiting both Montreal and Vancouver, one may want to visit Montreal during the Olympic Games and wait until they are over to visit Vancouver. This is because of the the heavy crowds and intense security the Olympic Games will know doubt bring to Vancouver. While the Olympic Games can be a great deal of fun to watch. Still, unless one is attending the Olympic Games, the overcrowding and long wait times in restaurants and other venues can be very overwhelming to say the least.

To this end, it can definitely be fun to explore Canada, especially with the guided travel and tours offered in many areas. There are also many periodicals and travel guides on Canada which can help assure a safe and smooth journey regardless of the mode of travel one desires to take to get there. As to information regarding travel once one is in Canada, there are also many Canadian tourist guides regarding the various areas provided in many regions of the country.

So, browse local bookstores or go online and find the one that covers the areas in Canada in which one wishes to travel. Then, check online to get an idea of what the area is like and look for travel brochures regarding the region. In doing so, one can find out about local events, lodging, restaurants and shows with reviews written by other travelers. To this end, one can then travel knowing their way around Canada and the best tours and travel which fit their needs once inside the borders.

A vacation in Florida is always fun and exciting. From the theme parks to the beaches, there is always something to do. Beautiful water and roller coaster rides are always a good thing when on vacation, and Florida has both. However, there is something that can make a vacation to Florida even more amazing and that is a train ride through this beautiful state. Through swamps and forests, sunrises and sunsets, the beauty of Florida, from Tallahassee to Miami can be viewed on the go in a relaxing environment when you are taking a train to Florida.

There are several passenger trains that run through Florida. Further more, you can find a train that will have stops in most any major city or tourist area throughout the state, allowing you to visit all the wonders of Florida. Not to mention this method of travel can actually alleviate a lot of hassle as well as provide an affordable means of transportation. With the rising cost of airline tickets, as well as the cost of gas and other expenses that come with car travel, the kind of transportation that a train can provide will get you to were you want to go, as well as let you relax and enjoy the scenery of passing towns.

A rule of thumb when traveling by train is plan your route. Also, plan ahead, you will always find it easier to get want you want. Especially if you are planning your trip near or around a holiday. Know where you want to go and when you want to be there. This will make it easier when choosing your rail company and which train you want to go with. Also knowing what the train stops are will help in choosing which rail company to go with. That way, if you want a quick route down to Florida, or a slower paced route, your trip will be a pleasurable one, and it will get you where you want to go with ease and zero hassles.

If you want to take your vehicle, there are some companies that have cargo holders that can bring it along. Just check with the companies for details and weight limits. Some may have the capacity to fit something as large as a small RV. This will allow you travel which ever way best suites you.
Joy-Ride Up The Hills
The people who are fond of travelling must take the joy ride of slow moving trains which run up to the hill resorts of Ooty (Udhangamandalam), Shimla, Darjeeling etc.

It is the most exciting experience of moving up the hills, passing the small hamlets and green terraced fields. One can pass through the tunnels, over bridges and enjoy the ride. This slow moving train provides you with the most panoramic view which will leave you captivated. The scenic hill resorts in these places are away from the hurly-burly life of the city.

The Shimla Toy Train

There are 107 tunnels between Kalka to Shimla when you travel by a toy train. The stunning view which the travelers encounter in between is worth admiring. The hill station Shimla is very well-connected by a broad gauge line and it is up to Kalka. The distance of 96 km is covered by the train in 6 hours From Kalka to Shimla.

The Darjeeling Toy Train

The most well known of all the toy trains, is the train which links the town of New Jalpaiguri to the beautiful hill station of Darjeeling. The Darjeeling Hill Railway the narrowest gauge and is surely the best ‘toy train’. The tiny old engine of this train delights the connoisseurs. There are no tunnels in Darjeeling line which is 86 km long, hence the travelers can have the never-ending view of the incredible scenery of the beautiful Himalayas. This seven-and-a-half hour journey is just amazing and memorable.

The Nilgiri Toy Train

The toy train of Nilgiri Mountain railway begins from the small town of Mettupalayam and thus the enjoyment starts. The train here moves at the maximum speed of 33-km per hour which is enjoyed by the passengers. The train treks across the plantations, plains and forest hills. There are 16 tunnels and some bridges on the way, which leave you mesmerized. This toy train journey must not be missed as it is a wonderful experience.

The Matheran Toy Train

The line is as old as 77 years and maintains a nexus between Neral to Matheran. This is the main way by which one can reach this tiny hill resort which is very close to Mumbai. Since there is less traffic in Matheran therefore it becomes a very peaceful and clean place. It takes around one-and-a-half hours to reach from Matheran to Neral. Here the train runs between sunrise and sunset which would leave you captivated.

One of the great things about traveling in Europe is that it could be done in a very inexpensive way. This situation of inexpensive travel gave birth to the backpackers and these were high school graduates or college kids who would spend their summers traveling around Europe with a month or two long trains pass which they would use optimally. They would also go and stay at inexpensive hostels, meeting other travelers and would go visit the different countries, sometimes in packs, sometimes with a travel buddy or even sometimes alone. This unique experience has spread to North America as well as Americans and Canadians do go on this journey, sometimes it is a rite of passage to them as this sense of independence and being pleasantly lost enhances their real life education about the world.

These days even backpackers from Asian countries have joined in this foray. Before the internet, these travelers were armed with travel guide books, the most popular ones were done by the Lonely Planet, a translation book, and cash or travelers checks. These days, with the advent of the Internet, travelers can go online and do their research on the fly and they can also have handy translation machines which enables them to converse with locals utilizing the local dialect or language.

Here are some things to know when planning to travel to Europe:

1. Do your research. Use the internet to plan your trip. Find out which are the best places to go ahead of time. Try to find the cheapest places to stay and see if you can book ahead of time. Also try to find the train schedules so you can plan your trip and avoid spending long hours at the train station.

2. See if there is any travel documents needed. Maybe your country doesn’t have reciprocity with some of the countries you intend to visit so you may need a visa. Some visa application periods take more than a month so plan ahead.

3. Get feedback from travel blogs. Sometimes the best information can be found online by those who have visited the area. This is something unique to the internet and it may be very useful to you.

The scope of traveling has also increased. Since 2000, travelers can now travel to Sweden directly by train through Brussels which can then take them to Copenhagen. The Oresund bridge links Copenhagen to Sweden through Malmo and aside from the train, this bridge also connects people traveling by their own cars from Mainland Europe, which would be Denmark, through Copenhagen to Sweden. The world has gotten smaller with such infrastructure in place. This Swedish Train has made more economical for both Swedish citizens to go travel to mainland Europe and vice versa and only adds to the Swedish economy in terms of increasing numbers of tourists.

Most people are familiar with the River Kwai Death Railway as being Thailand’s scenic rail trip option. However it is really the infamy of the line that escalates this trip in the eyes of the visitor. Admittedly spectacular in parts and with beautiful scenery along the Kwai Noi River to Namtok at the end of the line, it is but a small segment of the SRT system and by no means the only memorable sector to be found.

The River Kwai services leave from Thonburi station with additional services from the main Hualom-phong station during the November festival time. The Thonburi station affords splendid views of the river and is close to the Royal Barge sheds as well as being an architectural wonder with its clock tower facade.

Whether you have an interest in railways or not, trains are still an immensely pleasurable way to view the Thai countryside and are also cheap. The rail fare to Nam Tok, at the end of the Kwai line is still only 60 baht for a one way ticket and the Wongwian Yai service can still be found at around 20 baht round trip.

On local trains and many of the long distance expresses, vendors still ply their wares at the various stops along the line and many will be already aware of the new Korean -manufactured sleeper carriages available on most routes. Sleeper fares are still a real deal and more comfortable than ever and all first class carriages now have a shower area at the end of each carriage.

The Korean rolling stock is but the latest progressive foreign intervention into the State Railway with Japanese Kawasaki train units and British Rail “Sprinter” trains having upgraded the quality of train services within the last 10 years. Of course, the whole system was German-built, being a dream of King Chulalungkorn to link the hinterland to Bangkok and create a united “Thai Land” as well as fortifying links to the weak border points. It has recently celebrated its operational centennial with services duplicating the original public service to Korat.

The climb to the Korat Plateau, after the lineside temple views at Ayutthaya and especially Lopburi, is another of the lesser-noticed scenic sectors of the system. Here the route skirts Khao Yai National Park and the slow ascent affords excellent views of the lush central plains disappearing into the distance to be replaced by the comparatively flat and bare Isaan rice bowl.

For scenic mountain ascents the Doi Khun Tan National Park has by far the best to offer. Most travellers will see it at its best if being an early riser (0600-0700) on the Express Sleeper from Bangkok to Chiangmai.

The morning light hits the deep forested valleys in an array of color that is difficult to find elsewhere in the region and the basically uninhabited area adds to the slow switchback trundle of the train up the mountain. The climax of the ride is the final ascent to Doi Khun Tan station through a 2km tunnel, finally arriving at, in this writer’s opinion, the most beautiful, well kept station in the Kingdom. Basketed blossoms on the platform and green peaks in the backdrop give it a special feeling, especially when experienced in the atmosphere of Lanna’s cool morning air. The tunnel itself claimed many lives during its construction over a century ago and a plaque in respect of those workers can be seen at the southern portal. Many will argue the point that Hua Hin, with its Royal waiting room, is the more pleasant (and certainly more photographed) station, but Doi Khun Tan, with its inaccessibility, is a credit to the people that created it and those who currently man it. It really is only visited by those hiking into the National Park and for that reason alone has far fewer visitors than the Hua Hin version.

Sprinter train travellers on the Chiangmai day service from Bangkok will see Doi Khun Tan in the evening twilight, which can be almost as rewarding. The Sprinter service has become popular since its introduction, allowing train travellers to see all of the countryside between the two major cities during daylight. A similar situation exists with the Surat Thani to Bangkok sprinter service where travellers are able to view the coastal section from the south in daylight, previously missed with only the overnight sleeper services available. Sprinter trains, with their large viewing windows and airline-style reclining seats are a comfortable and affordable way to view the countryside. There are no traffic jams and one isn’t constantly watching for oncoming traffic!

The only criticism of the international express, and indeed all sleeper trains within the kingdom is the fact that first class sleepers have berths situated across the car. As trains tend to rock from side to side, actual sleep is only usually achieved in second class where berths are configured lengthways along side the carriage windows. The result in first class, despite the privacy of a double cabin, is one of being shunted up and down the bed in a traditional railroad manner. Check out the disembarking sleeper passengers when you are at journey’s end. The upperclass travellers always seem to have that extra jaded style to their morning arrival.

First class berths on the E & O Express are configured correctly i.e. lengthways and the luxury of this service far surpasses the SRT public trains and perhaps most other services in the world. The train is not a remnant of a bygone age, as are the sister trains in Europe, but a converted version of New Zealand’s Silver Streak, Christchurch to Greymouth train of the 1980’s. It blends well as a replica, but the minimum $1400 for the one way 2 night trip to and from Singapore is, to most, still expensive. Far easier to experience the train on the frequent Saturday night 5 hour dinner specials from both Bangkok and Singapore at $150 (6,450 baht) per head. Look out in the local press for departure dates.

For those looking for the alternative experience and not requiring E & O luxury, steam excursions ply the local Bangkok routes on the King’s Birthday and Chulalungkorn Day as well as during the Kwai festival.

The Ayutthaya specials usually cost around 100 baht for the round trip, a figure unheard of for European rail enthusiasts.

Thai Rail passes still exist but the complications of reserving seats and berths in advance can sometimes outweigh the good value from these visitor’s special deals. No matter, as long as one observes the 60 day advance purchase regulation and recognizes the popularity of train travel at holiday times, it is a very rewarding and value for money means of seeing the kingdom. Not only that, the punctuality is what may be expected of an originally German built system, as with the new reliable Skytrain.
