As an alternative to your usual way of spending your holidays, why not consider boating, if you haven’t already? These type of vacations are different from anything you have done before. They are intimate and relaxing. Besides, if you are aboard a big comfortable yacht, you can find a dozen of things to do. Even if you have just a small boat, the kids will definitely enjoy the ride, and you will feel so much more relaxed, basking in the sun from your fold-up chair.

Top destinations in the U.S.A.

Monterey Bay

This wonderful location for boating is situated between the city of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Peninsula. Boaters from around the world come here for a relaxing experience never to be forgotten. Sandy beaches, rocky shores and amazing seascapes are the main points of interest here. Stillwater, located south of Monterey Bay, is the starting point for many a boaters. Here you can hike on the coastline and golf at Pebble Beach. However, the weather is unreliable and, as many will tell you, while setting sail the weather can change out of nowhere.

Morro Bay, CA

Have you ever been to Hearst Castle? Maybe it’s time to go. This great building was built between 1919 and 1947, by William Hearst, one of the richest publish owners. The Hearst Castle represents one of the most important historical monuments in Central California, and while boating along the Central Coast, is a wonderful place to visit. Rocky cliffs end the rough shoreline abruptly, beaches so with sand so black you could mistake it for dirt and the Pacific Coast Mountain’s peaks that rise from the water like skyscrapers from a city is something worth seeing at least once in a life time.

Austin, TX

The capital city of Texas was named after Stephen F. Austin, also called the “Father of Texas.” It dates back to 1839. This is a perfect place for boaters, because of its lakes that cross along the city from the northern part to the very center of it. A series of damns on the Colorado River allowed these wonderful lakes to be formed. Even though boating is limited to canoes and electrically powered vessels, boating here is very unique, just because of the scenery. It is not everyday that you get the chance to cross a town by boat, especially in the US.

Chesapeake, Maryland

What would be the meaning of writing about boating in US, if I were not to mention Chesapeake? In the late 17th century, John Smith, an English explorer, said this would be the perfect location that God crated for man. As centuries passed his words came to be true, as, if you are a passionate boater, this location should be a must. Here you can find cruising occasions to last you more than a life time. The variety of things that can be done in Chesapeake couldn’t be charted even by an encyclopedic guide, so you should see it for yourself. But, it must be said that the weather is a major downside, as storms develop out of the blue. Nevertheless, you could visit this place for months and still find something new to see.

Regardless of whether you are a passionate boater, or you’re just looking for some relaxation, the above places are tailor made for having fun.

Family camping and nature go together like the perverbial horse and carriage. Having one without the other leaves the experience somewhat incomplete.

Families that flock to campgrounds nearly always choose this adventure holidays as a means to get closer to nature. The National Wildlife Federation released (in unnumbered order) its Top Ten Great Places to see America’s Wildlife. Family campers in Maine, Pennsylvania, Florida, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Montana can view wildlife up close at the NWF’s top ten locations.

American Bison-southwestern Oklahoma’s Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. The bison, or buffalo, which once roamed the wild west in the millions, numbers 650 in this refuge. Nearby campers may drive the roads available throughout the refuge to view this sturdy breed. Texas longhorn cattle and wild elk are also present.

Bald Eagle-Acadia National Park in Maine. The bald eagle, our nation’s symbol, has replenished itself through national recovery programs. Acadia is a family camping birdwatchers haven. A national park record 300 bird species may be scene at Park Loop Road and the outer islands.

Regal Fritillary Butterflies-National Guard training facilities at Fort Indiantown Gap in Pennsylvania. Family campers on a day trip can get a free guided tour in July from fort staff personnel to watch these delicate natural beauties desert their cocoons.

Synchronous Fireflies-Great Smokey Mountains at meadows southwest of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Adult male and female fireflies (Photinus carolinus) find each other in their brief lives of just three weeks and mate by synchronized flashing between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. every night throughout most of June. Family tours groups can make the nightly shows by joining the bus caravan run by the National Park Service from the Sugarlands Visitor Center.

Green Jays-Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Documented to house as many as 413 tropical bird species local to this area, the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is another birdwatcher’s dream nest. For the enjoyment of family campers, many of the exotic birds like the visitor’s center, where a photography blind and feeders are located.

Prairie Dogs-Badlands National Park at Roberts Prairie Dog Town in South Dakota. From Sage Creek Rim Road, thousands of black-tailed prairie dogs and some 20 members of the black-footed ferret clan make up the colony that lives here. North America’s fastest land mammal, the pronghorn, a 70 mph sprinter, may also catch the eye of family campers who traverse the park’s road.

American Alligators-Everglades National Park in Florida. The alligator is said to have survived for 65 million years. Family campers are advised to arrange tours through the Royal Palm Visitor Center, but the Anhinga Trail, a boardwalk, and canoe and hiking trips may also afford views of this ancestor of dinosaurs.

Sea Otters-Elkhorn Slough, an estuary fifteen miles north of Monterey on the central California coast. This lively water lover may be seen from the shore. Harbor seals and California sea lions are also popular with family campers who visit the area. A pontoon boat tour and rental kayaks are available for those who want to get on the water.

Grizzly Bears-Glacier National Park in Montana. A grizzly bear seen in the wild is a popular thrill for all ages. The Glacier National Park Service should be the first stop for family campers interested in getting the closest and safest look at an unpredictable grizzly bear.

California Condors-Bright Angel Lodge on Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim. The magnificently-winged condor roams Grand Canyon in a hearty group of 70. The nine-foot wingspan of the condor may be seen by family campers directly overhead if they are patient enough to hang out at Bright Angel’s cliffs from 8 a.m. to mid-afternoon. Make My Trip

These are ten havens for camping families who want to see nature’s creatures up close and personal. The United States leads the world hands down in its preserved wildlife acreage.

Austin isn’t short on history and its museums are a way to experience every bit of that history. Whether you’re a history buff, have children or just want a nice way to spend an afternoon in Austin, give these museums a try. They are but a small sampling of the variety of museums in this city.

AMOA – Downtown (located at 823 Congress Avenue)

The Austin Museum of Art – Downtown (AMOA) is a branch of AMOA which has a few locations around town. This version was opened in 1996. It has over 12,000 square feet of gallery area and features mostly 20th century art. In addition to permanent installations, the museum has tours, lectures and live events.

Austin Museum of art at Laguna Gloria (located at 3809 W. 35th Street)

This museum is one of the best local art museums. The collections are showcased in a Mediterranean-style villa that was originally built in 1916. There is lots of art from the 20th century, including many pieces from local Austin artists. The museum also features traveling exhibits that bring new art to the area.

Blanton Museum of Art (located on the University of Texas campus at 200 E. Martin Luther King Blvd.)

This is the nation’s largest university art museum and is well recognized throughout Austin as one of the best to visit. It features more than 17,000 pieces of artwork dating back hundreds of years. Among the many galleries you’ll find work from European, American and Latin American masters. There is always something new in the museum, so be sure to visit often.

Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum (located on the University of Texas campus at 2313 Red River Street)

For those interested in the history of one of the famous presidents from Texas, this museum is a interesting stop. This is a ten story builing on the University of Texas’s campus, It includes papers, gifts of state, displays about Johnson’s upbringing and even a replica of the Oval Office when he was president. This museum is free, based on the former president’s wishes.

Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (located on the University of Texas campus at Guadalupe and 21st Street)

Another one of the University of Texas museums, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center is one of the most unique museums in all of Austin. It has a wide variety of exhibits, including an original Gutenberg Bible, the first photograph ever made and the recreation of the office where Erle Stanley Gardner wrote the “Perry Mason” stories.

Mexi-Arte Museum (located at 419 Congress Avenue)

No town in the southwest would be complete without a museum that exhibits art from Mexico and Latin-American countries. The Mexi-Arte museum is one of the most popular in Austin. It has several permanent exhibitions and also traveling shows that come through the museum from around the country. It is also host of cultural enrichment programs and live events.

Again, these are just a few of the many, many museums located within Austin. After exploring these, you’re bound to enjoy the dozens of others in the city.

Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in not only Texas but the country. With more homes being built and people moving in, it’s no wonder that lots of people are looking for things to do in Austin. If you are looking for somewhere to go or something to do that won’t break the budget, look no further than these free activities in and around Austin.

Texas State Capitol

The Texas State Capitol is a great place to visit at least once, especially if you have school age children. The capital is located at 1100 Congress Avenue. There are daily tours of the Capitol building and morning tours of the Governor’s Mansion, all for free. The Capitol grounds contain 22 acres with 17 monuments in addition to the Capitol building itself.

The Congress Avenue Bats

For this free activity, you’ll have to time your visit between March and early Fall. Each summer approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats come to Austin and comprise the largest urban bat colony in North America. They reside underneath the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue bridge. Stand on the bridge near dusk and then witness the bats come out after dark.

University of Texas Campus and Museums

The UT campus itself is a great place to visit for free. The campus is historic for its architecture and history. View the University of Texas tower and the Littlefield Fountain. The Harry Ransom Center is a free museum that houses the world’s first photograph and an authentic copy of the Gutenberg bible. The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum also houses many historical and cultural exhibits. Finally, UT is home of the Texas Memorial Museum which includes real dinosaur tracks.

Zilker Botanical Gardens

This garden park is located in the Barton Springs area and houses 21 acres of park. There are many themed gardens on the grounds, including romantic rose garden, the butterfly garden and the Japanese garden. There is also a prehistoric garden that reflects this areas past as a major dinosaur roaming grounds during the Cretaceous period.

Blues on the Green

If you’re blues music enthusiast, you’ll appreciate this free concert series every summer. Sponsered by 107.1 KGSR, Blues on the Green is normally held in Zilker Park (although 2009’s festivities were in Waterloo Park due to construction projects). Local musicians like Marcia Ball, Los Lonely Boys and Jimmy Vaughan have all been part of the event in the past.

Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park

During the months of May through August you can catch this free concert series held at the Hartman Concert Park. Classical music, pops, jazz and film scores are played by ensembles from the Austin Symphony.

Movies in the Park at Republic Square

The Austin Parks foundation sponsors this event each summer at Republic Square Park. The films are projected onto an outdoor screen and residents are encouraged to bring their blankets, lawn chairs and picnic tables. The movies start at dusk.

Austin is a world-class city, filled with things to see and do whether you’re a long-time native or a first-time visitor. Known for its vibrant music scene, Austin combines a rich western tradition, southern hospitality, and a quirky flair all its own. With its countless museums and historical exhibits, offbeat shops and dining establishments, seeing all that Austin has to offer might take a lifetime. Here are some Austin attractions that are not to be missed.

Texas State Capitol in Austin

History buffs will love touring the Capitol building and browsing through the historical exhibits, including a collection of artifacts from the Battle of Saratoga in the House Chamber. Much of the original architecture is still on display, giving visitors a sense of Austin’s place in Texas history. Nearby attractions include the Texas Governor’s Mansion and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, so visitors can plan a whole day of historical sightseeing around a free walking tour of the Capitol and its grounds.

Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum

Combining modern sculpture with historic Texas art, the Umlauf Museum offers art lovers a look back at Texas history. Every style of Texas art from classic portraits to depression-era paintings is on display, and the sculpture garden displays the work of Texas’s own Charles Umlauf as well as many pieces by Umlauf’s students. Lectures and workshops are also available; reservations are usually required.

Zilker Botanical Garden

A quiet refuge from the bustling city outside, the Zilker Botanical Garden offers a traditional rose garden, herb garden, and cactus garden as well as some unusual gardens that make it a unique Austin attraction. One of the most popular gardens in the complex is the Isamu Taniguchi Japanese Garden featuring a Japanese teahouse, a traditional bridge, rock retaining walls, and Koi-filled reflecting pools. Children will love the Hartman Prehistoric Garden, which replicates as closely as possible the Cretaceous habitat and even includes a full sized sculpture of an Ornithomimus, a dinosaur that once lived in the Austin area.

Austin Nature and Science Center

Just down the road from the Zilker Botanical Garden, the Austin Nature and Science Center offers more dinosaurs at their Dino Pit, allowing visitors to search for dinosaur fossils in a replica of an actual paleontological dig site. Other exhibits include a collection of native Texas wildlife and a Naturalist Workshop that helps visitors explore the native botanical life of Austin.

Lady Bird Lake

Tourists and Austin natives both pause at nightfall, watching the flight of the Mexican Free-tailed bats from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Austin is home to over 1.5 million of these bats, so the display is impressive. The lake serves kayakers and canoeists, and music lovers won’t want to miss a trip to the Stevie Ray Vaughan memorial located on the lakeshore. Open-air concerts and music festivals are frequently held here or in nearby venues the year round.

Austin Steam Trains

No discussion of Austin attractions would be complete without mentioning the Austin Steam Train Association and its weekend tours of the Texas Hill Country just outside Austin. Vintage passenger rail cars provide a unique view of the countryside and a glimpse back into history, including a tour of the 1912 Bertram Train Depot. Reservations are recommended.

Many other museums, attractions and a world-class zoo are also available. Whatever your interests, Austin’s eclectic community offers something to suit your specific tastes, all with a uniquely Austin flavor.
