The Red Light District is probably the most famous section of Amsterdam. The windows in the area are filled with scantily-clad women and the streets are filled with drug dealers. As such, it is also one of the most dangerous areas, and a quick internet search will bring up a long list of warnings in addition to the usual tourist information sites. Despite this – or perhaps because of it – the Red Light District is an area where freedom is valued above all else and everyone is treated equally.

The Red Light District is located in the oldest area of Amsterdam and is made up of tall old buildings overshadowing the canal. It’s the oldest part of Amsterdam and dates back to the 14th century. It developed even more during the 17th century, a time when Amsterdam was Europe’s main trade center, with the creation of Amsterdam’s canals.

There have been many attempts to control prostitution over the years, and one of these efforts included confining the “pleasure houses” to certain sections of the city, forming the beginnings of what is now known as the Red Light District. Since many of the customers were sailors, it was only natural for these areas to be close to the canals. This area along the canals was originally filled with a huge variety of breweries as well as brothels and various other forms of entertainment. Since then, the breweries have turned into more tourist-friendly pubs and the brothels and other shops have become legally licensed, making them safer for workers and customers alike.

There are many attractions in the Red Light District besides the brothels. The “Old Church” is one of Amsterdam’s oldest and most original buildings. The Casa Rosso offers live erotic shows every night. The Erotic Museum features five floors full of pornographic artwork, including drawings John Lennon made for Yoko Ono as a wedding gift. The Venus Temple Sex Museum offers an interesting look at sex throughout history, showing historical artifacts from around the world as well as a look at popular culture and movies throughout the years. And finally, there’s the Bananenbar, where scantily clad barmaid perform a variety of tricks with bananas as props. With this last attraction, you pay a fee at the door to visit for an hour with all your drinking covered – though a request for a specific trick will cost you more.

Despite the government’s efforts to clean the area up, there are still plenty of pimps in the Red Light District. Their business ventures are still illegal and unlicensed, and therefore the women are often mistreated and there is no guarantee when it comes to their customers’ safety.

The main warnings to heed when visiting the Red Light District are to keep moving and leave your valuables at home. Don’t go alone and refrain from taking pictures of the women in the windows. If you follow these simple rules, the area is relatively safe.

Taking pictures or stopping to gawk at the ladies in the windows (without making use of their services) is likely to result in you loosing your camera or starting a fight. If you do plan on using the services available, you obviously need to bring some cash with you, but leave everything you don’t need (including your camera) in your hotel room. There are plenty of muggers in the area, and bumping into someone as you pass them on the street can often result in your wallet walking away. The drug dealers in the area will generally offer you whatever they are selling and then walk away when you decline their offer – no harm done – though you may be surprised at the number of them who approach you. Obviously, as with any potentially dangerous area, you want to make sure to bring a friend along.

If you are traveling on your own or want to learn more about the history of the area, there are guided tours of the area available from Amsterdam City Tours. Your safety is guaranteed on these tours and you even have the chance to talk to a retired prostitute and get some behind-the-scenes information.

The city

Amsterdam is the capital city, the financial and cultural capital as well as the largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The city has a population of around 1 million, including the suburbs. Its name is derived from Amstel dam, indicative of the city’s origin: a dam in the river Amstel where the Dam Square is today. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. The city was the leading center for finance and diamonds during that time. Amsterdam expanded and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were formed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The attractions

The city attracts more than 4 million tourist annually with its main attractions being the historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, its red-light district and its many cannabis coffee shops and many others.

Amsterdam’s Climate

Amsterdam enjoys a cool temperate climate, strongly influenced by its proximity to the North Sea to the west and winter temperatures are mild, seldom below 0°C. Amsterdam nights rarely fall below -5°C because it is surrounded by large bodies of water on three sides and enjoys a significant heat island effect. Summers are moderately warm but rarely hot. The average daily high in August is 22°C, and 30°C or higher is only measured on average on 3 days.Amsterdam has an average annual precipitation of less than 760mm. It is in the form of protracted drizzle or light rain, making cloudy and damp days common during the cooler months, October through March. Only the occasional European windstorm brings significant rain in a short period of time, requiring it to be pumped out to higher ground or to the seas around the city.

The Architecture of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is known for its rich architectural history. The oldest building in Amsterdam is the Oude Kerk (Old Church), at the heart of the Wallen, consecrated in 1306. Amsterdam had a variety of architectural styles influencing their buildings. The focal point of all the architectural styles before the end of the 19th century is the old city center. Most historic buildings in the city center and nearby are houses, such as the famous merchant’s houses lining the canals.

Tourism in Amsterdam

Shopping

Shops in Amsterdam range from small specialty shops to large department stores such as De Bijenkorf and Maison de Bonneterie, a Parisian style store. In Vondelpark you will find Cornelisz Hooftstraat and Cornelis Schuytstraat where most of Amsterdam’s high-end shops are located.Another shopping area is the Negen Straatjes and it differ from other shopping districts because of the presence of a large diversity of privately owned shops. Open-air markets are also widely spread throughout the city, icluding the Albert Cuypmarkt, Westermarkt, Ten Katemarkt, and Dappermarkt.

Transportation in Amsterdam

Bicycles

Amsterdam is a bicycle-friendly city and is the center of bicycle culture with many good facilities for cyclists such bike paths and bike racks pervading the city. Bicycle traffic and traffic in general is relatively safe, with only 18 traffic deaths in total for 2007.

Cars

In the city center, driving a car is discouraged. Parking fees are expensive, and many streets are closed to cars or are one-way.

Public Transport

Public transport in Amsterdam mainly consists of bus and tram lines. Pedestrians and cyclists can take one of the three free ferries to go across the IJ to Amsterdam-Noord or a fare charging ferry to go from the east to the west along the harbor. You can also be transported along Amsterdam’s waterways by means of water taxis, a water bus, a boat sharing operation, electric rental boats and canal cruises.

Amsterdam’s Culture and Entertainment

Museums

The most important museums of Amsterdam are located on het Museumplein (Museum Square), located at the southern side of the Rijksmuseum.

The Rijksmuseum possesses the largest and most important collection of classical Dutch art. With a collection of nearly one million objects.

In front of the Rijksmuseum on the square itself is a long, rectangular, pond that is transformed into an ice rink in winter time. You will also find the the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, House of Bols Cocktail & Genever Experience and Coster Diamonds at the Museum Square. The square is almost entirely covered by a lawn, making it the most prominent site in Amsterdam for festivals and outdoor concerts, especially in the summer. Amsterdam contains many other museums throughout the city. They range from small museums such as the Verzetsmuseum, the Anne Frank House, and the Rembrandthuis, to the very large, like the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, and Joods Historisch Museum.

Festivals

In the 2008 there were 140 festivals in Amsterdam. The most famous festivals are Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day), Amsterdam Gay Pride and the Uitmarkt. Hundreds of thousands of people travel to Amsterdam on Koninginnedag to celebrate with the residents of the city. The entire city becomes overcrowded with people buying products from the freemarket or visiting one of the many music concerts. This festival takes place on the 30th of April each year. During Gay Pride, there is a long parade of boats with floating down Amsterdam’s canals, and curious events taking place throughout the city. The Gay Pride annually takes place on the first Saturday in August. The Uitmarkt lasts for three days and it’s a cultural event. It consists of many podia with a lot of different artist on them, such as musicians and poets and is held in late August.

The city of Amsterdam is famous for, amongst other things, its vast collection of museums and concert venues, as well as the more adult side of the city in the form of its red light district.

An Amsterdam city break really can appeal to anyone. No where else has such a satisfying mix of liberal madness and high-brow culture. It’s quite incredible that despite all the potential for controversy, Amsterdam rarely attracts criticism and continues to appeal to people of all ages, and from all walks of life.

Amsterdam has got to be one of Europe’s top city break holiday destinations, and to be honest there is so much going for it, it’s hard to know where to start.

First is the ease of getting there. Schiphol Airport had been voted one of the finest in Europe and its high speed trains will whisk you the 14 km into the city centre every 15 minutes. Then there is the ease of getting around. Amsterdam has excellent tram and bus services, not to mention the canal cruises that take in all the cultural holiday hotspots as well as the beautiful byways.

Above all Amsterdam city centre is physically small and relatively quiet, with many streets-traffic free and bicycles the transport of choice for most Amsterdammers. It’s a great place to wander around and so easy to take in the top cultural sights – and what treasures there are. This is the home of both Rembrandt and Van Gogh – two giants of the art world, with museums dedicated to both. Opera, theatre, dance, street theatre – Amsterdam has it in buckets.

But high art is not all that’s in the frame in this cosmopolitan bowl of multicultural delights. There’s the infamous Red Light District where scantily clad girls parade for custom behind neon lit windows. And there are the notorious coffeeshops where cannabis is openly sold and smoked as customers sip their cappuccinos. There is street theatre in Dam Square, open air concerts in the huge city centre Vondeldpark and one of the best zoos in Western Europe.

And for those who like nothing better than to wander, Amsterdam is a weekend city break destination like no other. The quaintly gabled 17th and 18th century houses are a Dutch delight, as are the cosy rings of picturesque tree-lined canals than encircle the whole city with their cobbled canalside streets full of boutiques, curio shops and book stalls.

Amsterdam defies its northerly location with an alfresco street cafe society that cashes in on every glimpse of sun. Add a wide and varied ethnic mix and you have the recipe for an astonishing range of cuisine, with virtually every international taste catered for – from Thai to Turkish, Icelandic to Indonesian. Add a dash of Amsterdam’s home grown speciality pancake restaurants that offer an endless choice of pizza-sized pancakes and omelettes and you are guaranteed some fabulous meals.

Enjoying Amsterdam city breaks has never been easier. There is a great choice of cheap flights to Amsterdam from most UK airports and a wide range of hotels from luxury to budget accommodation.
Amsterdam is regarded by many as the city with the most intricate and efficient navigable waterways in the world. It was once the financial hub for all of Europe but today is known more for its ‘tolerant’ character with regards to activities such as prostitution and cannabis.

It has over 50 museums satisfying the hunger of many tourism tastes including that of art, architecture, diamonds, Jewish history, war history and beer. There are even museums displaying the history of sex, erotica, hash and torture. The museums vary in size from the grandiose of the Rijksmuseum to the fascinating Amstelkring, also known as Out Lord in the Attic, in the Red Light district.

Despite its rich and turbulent art, religious and trade history, the city had a modest beginning early in the 13th century as a fishing village and by the middle of the 13th century construction of ‘ Aemestelledam , medieval Dutch for ‘Dam in the Amstel, commenced. The first canals were then built for defence and water management but the ease of transporting traded goods between ships from all over the world contributed to the expansion of the 17th century.

By 1660, the city had quadrupled in size with 3 main canals. Both sides of the canals were lined with houses of wealthy merchants reaping the benefits of having their goods delivered to their doorstep on the water.

Although, in the early 20th century, many canals were filled in to allow for the building of more roads, a quarter of the city’s area still consists of waterways with up to 65 miles of ancient canals. There are now 5 main concentric semi-circles of canals or ‘grachts’ called Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht and Singelgracht.

Today the original dam is known as the famous Dam Square. Damrak, the main road leading into Dam Square was once the end of the Amstel River. It remains in the heart of the city and although not everyone’s image of beauty, is flanked by the Royal Palace and remembered as the meeting point for Napoleon and his troops during the 1808 takeover of the city.

An array of transport modes are available to get around the sites of Amsterdam including buses, trams, the subway, taxis, cars and even bikes. However, for door to door services like the ancient residents, the public transport operators Museumboat and the Canal Bus, stop at almost all of Amsterdam’s museums and attractions via the web of canals. Some of these main attractions include Anne Frank’s house, Madame Tussaud, Rembrandt’s house, Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh’s Museum, Heineken Brewery Museum, Diamond Factory Tours and the Jewish Historical Museum.

As Amsterdam was built to be appreciated from the water, there are endless types of canal cruises on offer. The historical luxury Saloon boat cruises are appealingly restored from their original early 20th century creations. They were once sailed by professionals to entertain their clients and guests.

Cruises from the various fleets can be taken at virtually any meal time including breakfast, lunch, high tea and even cheese, wine or beer tasting. Dinner time cruises offer the choice of cuisine including Thai, French, Indonesian, barbeque, pizza, sushi and even pancakes.

Other themed cruises cater for lovers of music, cocktails and drinks, theatre, romance, children’s parties, antique ferryboats, literature and of course the famous red light district.

The central part of the city revolving around Dam Square is divided by Damrak into the old part (Oude Zijdse) on the east side and the new part (Nieuwe Zijdse) on the west side. The Oude Zijdse was once a hive of activity during the middle ages and Amsterdam’s Golden Age of the 17th century. Boats would sail up to Nieuwe Markt to have goods weighed at the Waag before being traded. Attractions of the Oude Zijdse include the gothic Oude kerk which is the oldest church in Amsterdam dating back to the 13th century. Passers by often hear the exquisitely toned 1724 organ in the summer months through the beautiful stain glass windows.

The major modern museums are found in the Nieuwe Zijdse as is the pedestrians-only shopping street, Nieuwedijk.

Coffee shops and cafes are found all over the city. Generally speaking, cafes serve only standard non-alcoholic beverages and food. Coffee shops present more liberal menus for their customers to meet their various consumption desires.

Apart from the smorgasbord of restaurants, coffee shops, cafes and museums many squares (pleins) and parks provide visitors with down time after busy days. Relax in Vondelpark near Leidesplein, which is also the main nightlife area, or just past Waterloo plein is the Hortus Botanicus and Artis ( one of the oldest zoos in the world ) Leidesplein, Leidesestraat, Rembrandtplein, Muntplein and Museumplein all are lined with various boutique, family, budget and modern hotels. The luxurious Hotel Krasnapolski and Amstel Hotel both date back to the 19th century.

Amsterdam has something for everyone to do including children and on any budget. Its relaxed atmosphere and modern approach to life is welcoming yet allows for escapism back in time for a valuable historical education.

Amsterdam is the capital and the largest city of the Netherlands. It is located in the province of North Holland and has an average population of around 750,000. The name Amsterdam comes from ‘Amstel dam’, which basically means a dam in the river Amstel.

Amsterdam was once one of the most important ports in the world and since the city has expanded, Amsterdam has been deemed as the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands.

The surrounding land around Amsterdam is fairly flat and the city itself has a large number of canals running through it. Also, to the southwest of Amsterdam there is a large man-made forest which can be seen from the city.

Amsterdam is home to a fairly temperate climate, the winters are mild but rarely falls below 0 degrees celsius, and the summers are warm but rarely very hot.

A lot of the buildings and architecture in Amsterdam are fairly old looking but visually stunning none the less. The canals in the city were once meant for defensive purposes but are now used for residential development. Some of the original canals in Amsterdam have been filled in to make way for streets and squares within the city. Thanks to the canals, more than one hundred bridges have been built to enable easy access throughout the city.

Amsterdam is currently the 5th busiest tourist destination in Europe and attracts around 4.2 million international visitors each year with this number growing very rapidly. A lot of tourists who visit Amsterdam like to visit the small, unique shops located in the city that normally have some sort of speciality. Also, a lot of people enjoy coming to the city to experience the bicycle friendly zones and the many paths created especially for this purpose. Getting some exercise while taking in the sites is often one of the most popular pastimes in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam has its own airport so flights to Amsterdam are easy to come across; with so many airlines flying there cheap flights to Amsterdam are also very easy to come across. Amsterdam flights from the UK take approximately 2 hours and so are perfect if you wish to get away for a short break.

If it’s been a while since your last camping holiday, Holland’s campsites will be a revelation to you! Gone are the days when you would have to squelch across muddy fields and then drive to the nearest attraction. A tent or mobile home at Holland’s best campsites will see quality entertainment right on your doorstep!

My personal favourite is Camping Duinrell. To me, it’s definitely the best campsite in Holland. It’s set in the lush woodland surroundings of a nature reserve and boasts its own tropical waterpark and theme park, with plenty of entertainment available in the evenings. It’s family friendly and offers activities for both children and adults.

The Fine Weather

While Holland’s campsites are unlikely to beat their Spanish equivalents in terms of sunshine, you may be pleasantly surprised by the Dutch weather over the summer months. Between May and September, the average temperature is a warm 17-23 degrees centigrade, and if you choose the more off-season times of April or October, you’ll be treated to a temperate 13-15 degrees.

The Things to Do

You’re not short of things to do when you holiday in a tent or a mobile home in Holland. If you choose the Camping Duinrell site I praised earlier, you have a theme park right on your doorstep which features a selection of fun rides and attractions. What’s more, Duinrell Theme Park is free to those who are holidaying at the campsite, so there’s no excuse not to try every ride at least once! If this isn’t enough for you, De Efteling Theme Park in Kaatsheuvel is another one worth visiting with exciting rides based around the park’s magical fairytale theme.

If white knuckle rides aren’t your thing, you may want to consider the Hoge-Veluwe National Park. Covering 5,500 acres and made up of sands, heath and forests, the park showcases a wide range of wild animals including wild boar and red deer. It’s an hour and a half drive from my recommended Holland campsites and well worth it for nature lovers.

Elsewhere, Holland is blessed with some truly wonderful cities. Amsterdam is the most famous of course, with its superb range of galleries and museums. It’s also a picturesque city to wander round, and visitors can even enjoy the sights via a canal boat tour. Rotterdam is also worth a look, featuring over 30 museums and some truly wonderful architecture. Finally Delft – well known for its blue pottery – is about as idyllic as a town can be. Canals, arched bridges, calm courtyards, pretty churches and imposing mansions are the order of the day here.

With the credit crunch, camping is coming back in a big way, and Holland’s campsites deserve to be amongst the frontrunners. Not only are they all of an excellent standard, but camping in Holland allows you to take part in some wonderful activities, and see some world famous sights in the picture-postcard countryside of the Netherlands. If all of this sounds like your type of break, why not consider camping in a tent or mobile home in Holland next summer?

There’s a popular saying that Amsterdam is where you go to party and thus, it is no surprise that there are numerous places where you can drop by for your favorite drink – at equally tasty prices of course. But where to go? There’s so much on offer! Many tourists end up in the areas of Leidseplein or Rembrandtsplein, these are one of the more «touristy» parts of the city. They are still great places, but if you really want to visit a local place where the Dutch go to drink, you should try to find a place a bit off the beaten track.

The city of Amsterdam has lost half of its waterways to build more streets, buildings, and parking spaces. However, it is still known as the most watery city as canals and harbours are all over the city. You can get an Amsterdam Canal Cruise and get a taste of history.

The Canal Cruise

The Amsterdam Canal Cruise is an attraction that is well known all over the world. It is a good idea to get on this cruise if you’re with your loved one as there are special candlelight dinners with the locals giving you extraordinary service.

It is also a great way to spend time with friends. There are a lot of party ships that have International Deejays so you and your friends can spend the whole night dancing and partying. The Amsterdam Canal Cruise offers almost any type of entertainment for any nationality and age. You’d be missing a lot if you don’t try this cruise when you’re in Amsterdam.

If you don’t want a crowd, you still have the option to explore the canal on your own. There are pedal boats available which you can use so you can have some time for yourself in the canals.

The Pleasure of Boating

Most of the time you will see the canals full of tour boats. On some occasions, there will be private yachts that come from Germany and France as this city is a very good destination for pleasure cruising. You may get lucky if you witness the Queen’s Day or the Gay Parade. These are big events in Amsterdam. However you may experience heavy traffic in the canals during these events as there will be a lot of people wanting to take part in the celebration.

Amsterdam Houseboats

Houseboats are a common sight while you’re on Amsterdam Canal Cruise. Houseboats were used to transport merchandise before, but today, houseboats are floating private residential properties.

Cruising on Clean Water

One good thing about Amsterdam Canal Cruise is that the water itself is clean. Since a good percentage of Amsterdam’s area is covered by water, water cleanliness is a major concern of everyone. And so far, the people of Amsterdam have done a good job taking care of their water. It is also important for citizens to be conscious of water quality for sanitary reasons.

How Amsterdam Keeps its Waterways Clean

Today, water in the canals of Amsterdam is as clean as ever. Here’s how they do it: They close up the water locks that are found around the city. Once they are closed, they regularly pump in clean water from the nearby lake. The fresh water replaces the stagnant water all the way through the other side of city through some selected and open water locks.

There are also cleaning boats that patrol the area to remove visible dirt on the surface. Because of the clean water, there are actually fishes and crabs living and thriving on the city waters of Amsterdam. Truly, an Amsterdam canal cruise is a perfect getaway vacation.
