The Old Continent will always hold a big draw, and particularly when it comes to honeymoons. Europe is a very lively place that encompasses a wide variety of traditions, languages and sceneries. Below are a few locations that allow for romance and living it up.

Paris, France
The French Capital remains the favorite honeymoon choice for newlyweds, and rightfully so: Beautiful streets, monuments, culture, entertainment galore and everywhere wonderful cuisine. This European icon is so diverse. Couples delight in guided tours on an open excursion boat along the Seine, especially at night, to photograph the awe-inspiring cathedrals and markets Paris is revered for.

Montmartre, in the north of Paris, is a very lively neighborhood where you and your partner see the city at its most bustling and try the excellent cuisine its hundreds of bistros and restaurants have to offer. Night life is also very vibrant in this part of Paris, as we are reminded by the 1999 French film “Amelie”. Culture is inescapable, and don’t forget that the Louvre and Orsay show a wealth of artistic works in the most romantic of settings.

Venice, Italy
Venice is most certainly the world’s most preferred honeymoon spot: The bridges and waterways and the architecture in particular, which have received wide coverage in Hollywood movies are often enough to want to go there for a romantic voyage. There are, however, lots of different ways to get the most out of the city and its surroundings, perfect for a honeymoon.

Fine dining is definitely one of them, especially in breathtaking places like the Piazza di San Marco. Culture, whether it is art or architecture, is ever present in Venice, giving you freedom to either go for long walks or canal tours around the city’s famous neighborhoods, or venture for a deep cultural dive into several of the city’s myriad art galleries. Add a little shopping and it adds up to the ideal honeymoon place.

The Santorini Volcano, Greece
This archipelago glories in the awe-inspiring views and historical pull that is typically associated with Greece. The Santorini volcano, which was once thought to shelter the ruins of Atlantis, is a haven of inspiring Mediterranean sceneries and authentic Greek communities. Attractions abound in Santorini and can turn it into a memorable honeymoon.

Sandy beaches are a short walk or a bus ride away; be sure to stick around at least once so you don’t miss the magnificent sunset on the ocean or from your table on a deck. Archeological dig sites are also a big attraction, not to forget the volcano’s crater, which is still active and accessible to tourists. It is the ultimate Greek experience, and perhaps the most romantic spot on the Mediterranean coast.

Prague, Czech Republic
Centrally located in the Czech Republic, Prague commonly counts as Eastern Europe’s most beautiful citiy, both for its cultural background and its colorful lifestyle. The Old Town is without questions the city’s most popular section of the city; it has endured hundreds of years of diverse history and is peppered with landmarks like the Old Town Square and the Old Synagogue.

Prague provides a wide selection of cultural excursions. Some examples are the National Museum and the Museum of Decorative Arts. What also makes Prague special is a seldom found combination of old gothic and modern architecture, a very distinct setting that is extremely popular with travelers as a group and newlyweds in particular.

There is nothing better than finishing work on a Friday and knowing that you have all weekend to relax. A full workweek can be gruelling and exhaust even the most enthusiastic and energetic of worker. Escaping from those stresses is harder now than it has ever been and a weekend break is absolutely necessary once in a while to fully recharge flat batteries.

Everybody has different wants and needs to fulfil in order for them to fully relax. Regardless of what your personal wants and needs are, there are a few cities that will fulfil a great weekend break. Here are the top ten weekend getaways:

1. Chicago – Chicago is perfect for every individual that wants to get away for the weekend. The city has the perfect ambience because of the variety of activities available. The beach can be a haven for relaxation and contemplation, but the city shops are also perfect for retail therapy. The variety of activities on offer is immense – from natural exploration of the Great Lakes to sightseeing around the architectural marvels of the city, there is something for everyone. Staying in a hotel like the Inter-Continental Hotel Chicago can also enhance your stay, with a luxurious setting in a prime location.

2. Dublin – Dublin is great for a weekend getaway because it is effectively the heart of Ireland. There is so much to do, whether your ideal break is strolling around Dublin Castle, visiting historical buildings like the St Patrick’s Cathedral, relaxing in cafes or visiting the Temple Bar where there are funky shops. The Russell Court Hotel is the perfect location to enjoy it from. It is the centre of the city and within walking distance of most of the main attractions.

3. Calgary – This is a must-visit Canadian city if you love to relax in beautiful natural surroundings but have the best of the busy urban environment to amuse yourself too. There is a whole host of shopping options as well as the beauty of Lake Louise, landmarks like the Calgary tower and fun family days at the Calgary Zoo. De-stressing yourself will come with no effort at all here. The Sandman Hotel Downtown is just one of the many places you can choose to stay to fully appreciate your visit.

4. Geneva – The natural beauty of Switzerland such as Lake Geneva will leave you breathless in awe. It is a truly old city with astounding beauty. The architecture is fascinating like the Cathedrale de St-Pierre, but the choice of cafes allows you to take in the ambience of the city too. There are hotels all over the city, but for the best weekend break, a centrally located one will give you access to all of the amazing activities the city has to offer. Try the Beau Rivage Hotel Geneva for the best blend of affordable luxury and prime location.

5. Wilmington, North Carolina – This is the ultimate beach weekend break. Wilmington offers the relaxation of a beach on the Atlantic Ocean with small sidewalk cafes and quaint little shops. The atmosphere is extremely relaxing and unhurried, making it a lovely place to relax in and escape from the hassle of every day life. Visit attractions like the Cape Fear Museum and Screen Gems Studio. It doesn’t matter where you stay because the city works its magic regardless, but the Holiday Inn there is particularly quaint and friendly, with excellent service and facilities.

6. Sequoia National Park – if you want to get back to nature then this is the weekend break for you. Sequoia National Park offers a range of outdoor activities and attractions like Crystal Cave, Hume Lake and Kings Canyon. Wuksachi Lodge is in the heart of the park and offers full access to all facilities, thus making it an excellent place to stay. The service you will receive there is second to none. Ultimately though, the scenery is awe-inspiring and will relieve any strenuous weeks endured at work.

7. Amsterdam – This busy city caters for every tourist passing through without making you feel like an outsider. Relax at cafes and bars such as the Bamboo Bar, Café Meander or at the beautiful jazz bar Casablanca. There are also great theatres including the De Balie and Bellevue Cinerama Calypso. The culture just has to be sampled to be appreciated. Hotels like the Victoria Hotel offer elegant accommodation just outside the city for a quiet haven to relax in to perfectly compliment the busy nature of the city.

8. Rome – Rome is the heart of Italy’s cultural past. There is so much to see and do here, from the ancient architecture like the Colosseum, to the cultural cafes that you cannot help but feel relaxed. The Victoria Hotel is one of the best hotels in Rome and offers unashamed luxury. If you are looking for a city with old values and customer service to match, then this is the place for you.

9. New York – There is the lure of Broadway, art museums to inspire you, the historical buildings and statues like the statue of Liberty as well as the world-renowned shopping experience near Time Square. The city is so addictive that you will want to go back for more. The Edison Hotel is in a perfect city location and provides a comfortable place to relax after the busy days you are likely to have in the city.

10. Bordeaux – A weekend break that involves drinking wine may be just what some individuals need to relax after a hard week at work, and that is exactly what you will get in Bordeaux. This French region is at the heart of the wine production France is famous for. Relaxing in vineyards and watching the world go by in cafes or relaxing at Les Sources de Caudalie Spa can make you appreciate life so much more. Appart Valley is a perfect hotel in terms of location and facilities and can make your stay that little bit more special.

Weekend getaways must be tailored to your specific needs in order to get the most out of them, but all of the destinations on the above list may entice you to try something out of the ordinary. Time is precious, so enjoy your weekend breaks as much as you possibly can.

The Colosseum area virtually defines central Rome, but it is a south central district. This area overflows with history; it was once the center of the Western world. You’ll find the Roman Forum and Caesar’s Forum when Julie wanted to make a statement. Of course there’s the Colosseum itself, home to countless slaughters of people and animals. Once it held lions, now it holds errant pussy cats. At least there are no more slaughters. But you will want to see it, and so you might consider lodging in the neighborhood. The Domus Aurea, the Gold House, was Nero’s monument to conspicuous consumption carried to the nth degree. His palace actually covered one third of the city. It was lost for centuries but can and should be seen now. Don’t miss the Arch of Constantine, and to see how nature compares with us mere mortals, enjoy the Palatine Hill, preferred by Romulus. As you may well suspect, there is a museum, the Museo Palatino. For your convenience we have listed neighborhood hotels in approximate order of cost, starting with the least expensive. We have personally verified that all hotels contain a website that includes English-language pages.

The Bed and Breakfast Santi Quattro al Colosseo is located in an elegant, recently restored 1930s building. Try not to think about who was ruling the roost in 1930s Italy, he did get his due. If you stay here you will be close to just about everything that matters in the area, including a restaurant belonging to the same owners. You do get breakfast without having to go for a walk. Every room has a view of the Colosseum. On the other hand, the reception desk is by no means 24/7. There are 4 rooms and 3 apartments. The bed and breakfast address is Via dei Santi Quattro, 64 – 00184 Roma.

The Palazzetto degli Artisti offers double, triple, and quad rooms. The building was constructed around the turn of the century (when the Eighteenth became the Nineteenth century) in what had been the heart of Ancient Rome near the Colosseum. There are five floors; the top is a terrace from which you get a great view of all that matters and much more. There’s an in-suite breakfast. The bed and breakfast address is Via della Madonna dei Monti, 108 – 00184 – Rome.

The four-star Grand Hotel Palatino offers more than 200 rooms including several suites and two restaurants, a bar and lounge, and several meeting rooms. There is access for the disabled. The top floor has executive rooms with private balconies. This hotel’s address is Via Cavour, 213/M – 00184 – Rome.

The five-star Hotel Gladiatori Palazzo Manfredi offers only 17 rooms and some suites so you may have to reserve well in advance. The terrace has been used as a TV and movie set. The hotel is built on a site where gladiators were housed in the days when the Colosseum housed lions. Stay in a suite and you get tickets for the Colosseum as well as breakfast. The property is non-smoking. The hotel address is Via Labicana, 125 – 00184 – Rome.

A trip to Venice offers an unforgettable glimpse into life in one of the world’s most unique cities. Venice is made up of six main neighborhoods, all separated by the Grand Canal. The heart of the city is considered to be San Marco which lies in the great lower bend of the Grand Canal.

When you think of a Venice short break, you tend to think of couples and romance, but this beautiful city is a wonderful place for a family holiday as well. If you are planning a trip to Venice with your family, you will find the information here useful.

In terms of when you should visit Venice with your family, the period between September and April is advisable. Most families prefer not to go to Venice in the summer, because it can get uncomfortably hot. The period from September to March is a good time to travel to Venice, and in April, the city is at its best. February sees carnival time in Venice, so you should go then if you’d like to be a part of the celebrations.

Even though the chief views such as St Mark’s Square and Basilica, the Rialto Bridge and the Palazzo Ducale are crowded with large number of people all the year around from all over the world, at the same time it is not complicated to get away from the crowds. The backside streets are creased with buildings that in any other city would be most important attractions, the museums are bursting with riches and the drowsy islands of Italy’s most well-known lagoon embraces glories of their own.

Walking around the city is the best way to take in all of the unique architecture and character of Venice. A map is essential to tackling the winding streets of this city even though it will probably not protect against getting lost. But what better place is there to be lost in than Venice? Walking is also a great way to discover some of the lesser known neighbourhoods of this town, thus providing a more authentic experience. For those who want a true taste of Italy, those areas that lie off the beaten path also offer more authentic and tastier meals which cater less toward foreign visitors.

Music lovers rejoice in May and June as one of Rome’s best jazz festivals gears up to take place for another year celebrating all things swing. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting this beautiful Italian city at this time of year, the chances are you’ll be perfectly placed to take in some wonderful live music – and with loads of different jazz artists to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find something you’ll love.

The Dolce Vita Jazz Festival takes place each year in the Palma Club and Auditorium Music Park and, depending on just how into jazz you are, you might want to consider choosing your hotel based on how close it is. There’s plenty on offer, so even if you don’t think you’ll be spending quite your entire trip taking in some tunes, staying close by certainly has its advantages in terms of hotels that are both high quality and cost effective. You’re also well within range of plenty of tourist attractions so you needn’t worry about missing out on the other amazing aspects Rome has to offer, but instead are free to just focus on having fun.

Italians pride themselves on their musical roots and, while jazz may not be one of the musical genres most commonly associated with the country, you can rest assured that Italians know how to swing. With around 60 artists performing at the Dolce Vita Jazz Festival, there’s a huge range of talent and styles to take in, with each performer bringing their own individual personality to what they do. You’ll be able to experience Rome’s local jazz scene, as well as enjoy seeing performers from the rest of Italy, Europe and the world who have travelled to the capital just to take part. What’s more, the abundance of like-minded individuals you’ll bump into at the festival means you can prepare to meet a whole new group of friends – perfect for making your trip to Rome one that will stay in your memories forever.

Rome’s Dolce Vita Jazz Festival is well worth attending and it’s a fantastic idea to stay in the area if you can. Whether you’re looking for budget accommodation or the height of luxury hotels in Rome, you can rest assured that your experience at the festival will be made even greater by staying close by. That way, you’ll be able to ’swing’ around to the festival whenever it suits you most and enjoy fantastic fresh music from incredible performers.

The Cannaregio district is the second largest of Venice’s six districts, locally known as sestiere. It’s in the north of Venice and, unlike some of the others, people actually live there. Its attractions include the Venice Ghetto, the Fourteenth Century Ca’ d’Oro (or more properly the Palazzo Santa Sofia) which was literally a Golden House, Sacca della Misericordia, the Palazzo Labia, and the Casino di Venezia (Venice Casino). For your convenience we have listed these hotels in approximate order of cost, starting with the least expensive. We have personally verified all website addresses making sure that they include English-language pages.

The family owned Al Palazzetto overlooks the San Sofia canal. It’s quite close to the Ca’ d’Oro, and you can easily walk to the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco. Breakfast is served in the room. There are only 6 rooms, 2 suites, and 1 apartment. The hotel address is Calle delle Vele, Cannaregio 3969.

The 3749 Ponte Chiodo is a bed and breakfast near a lovely bridge that still doesn’t have a handrail. It lies just across the Grand Canal from the famous Rialto Fish and Spice Market. During the summer months they serve breakfast in the garden, the rest of the year it’s served indoors. Guests have kitchen privileges for snacks. Be warned, there is no elevator and there are only 6 rooms. The hotel address is Calle Racchetta, Cannaregio 3749.

The Ca’ Gottardi is part of a Fifteenth Century palace. It is situated just off the Grand Canal near the Ca’ d’Oro. Breakfast is served in a lovely room overlooking a canal. You should try to reserve early enough to stay in the main building rather than the annex. There are a total of 23 rooms and 5 suites. The hotel address is Strada Nova, Cannaregio 2283.

The Hotel Antico Doge has an extensive history which you can read on their website. Suffice it to say that this was the palazzo of a Venetian Doge. This neighborhood is lively, even at night. Make sure to look up at the frescoed ceiling when enjoying your breakfast buffet. There are 10 rooms, 9 junior suites, and 1 suite. The hotel address is Campo Santi Apostoli, Cannaregio 5643.

The Palazzo Abadessa is located in a luxurious Sixteenth Century palazzo. This is one posh joint, so you may have to watch the kiddies because the antique furniture and exquisite fabrics are just about everywhere. In the summer breakfast is served in a walled garden. There are 8 rooms and 5 suites. The hotel address is Calle Priuli off Strada Nova, Cannaregio 4011.

Sicily, Italy is a place well worth visiting and below we look at ten reasons why Sicily is a place worth considering for a vacation or holiday.

1. The Etna volcano: If you love scenic beauty then Sicily has it all. Stand on top of the Etna volcano. You can see the ocean on a clear day and in winter time, you can ski down the Etna. The Etna is an active volcano which is a must see site. You can walk around the old crater and there is also the choice to do an organized hike further up the side of the volcano.

2. The Sicilian beaches: Sicily has some beautiful beaches including in Catania. The aptly named beach La Plays, is a particular nice beach with excellent facilities i.e. deck chair hire, refreshments hut and volleyball courts marked out, on the beach. The beach itself is sand, with palm trees dotted around.

3. The town of Taormina: Taormina is a stunning town built on a hilltop, with a cable car leading down to the beach area below. In the middle of the summer many famous faces meet there to attend the Taormina movie festival in the roman theatre area. This town is a wonderful place.

4. Climate and weather: You cannot beat the Sicilian weather. Perhaps avoid August because many things are closed as Sicilians go on vacation to avoid the heat.

5. Italian and Sicilian food: It goes without saying that the food is a reason by itself to think about visiting Sicily, including Catania, Taormina and Palermo. Every town and city in Sicily has its own dishes as well as the more popular Italian foods. You can also enjoy the excellent Italian wines.

6. The Sicilian people are a fascinating mix of many cultures and from a cultural point of view, if you are interested in the different peoples of different countries, Sicily is a great place to be.

7. Diving holidays: Sicily is a great place including if you are looking for somewhere to go diving on your vacation. Sicily has some very good diving areas particularly on the South coast of the island. There are a few dive schools and some interested diving areas worth exploring.

8. Sicilian history: Sicily is rich in history and you can for example visit and photograph the Roman ruins in Catania, or you can stand in the stunning Roman amphitheater in Taormina. There are sites of historical interest right across the island.

9. The pace of life: If you are looking for a relaxing holiday then the slow pace of life in Sicily might be perfect for you. Things do not generally happen fast and this might well suit your style of vacation. Enjoy the food, lay on the beach with a book, visit some historical sites.

10. Something different: Many people have not visited Sicily and Sicily is thus somewhere different in many ways. I meet few people (except Sicilians) who have visited Sicily and if you want to go somewhere different, yet interesting, Sicily can be an ideal place.

Not far from Siena, and only 50 kilometers or so south of Florence in the heart of Tuscan Italy, you will find the medieval precursors of skyscrapers in this gem of a walled hilltop city overooking the Elsa valley.

Actually, the numerous tall stone towers are only around 50 meters high, and of the 70 or more originally built by the weathy residents in the 14th century, only about 14 remain. But in their context, they stand out impressively and create a unique architectural curiosity with a peaceful ambience, both as landmarks to view from a distance and to walk around or explore up close.

Inside many of these vertical embellishments to the skyline, which are often extensions of a church, are preserved treasures of early Renaissance art. The main ones to visit are the Collegiata, which was originally a cathedral, and Sant Agostino, where you will stumble delightedly upon frescoes and early paintings by a range of Italy’s most famous artists. There is also an official Town Gallery in the former Palacio Comunale off the main Piazza Cisterna, where by following in Dante’s footsteps through his Hall, you may view works by Lippi, Pinturicchio, and Pier Francesco Fiorentino to name but a few. From here, you can also access the largest tower, or Torre Grosso.

There is not a great deal else to do except enjoy walking around the narrow cobbled lanes, soaking up the pervasive sense of history and culture, and investigating some of these hidden charms. But you may well wish to taste some of the local produce, and especially the now-famous Vernaccia white wine, which goes down a treat with fish and seafood cooked up in the romantic and intimate local eateries. Try, for instance, the Antica Taverna up by the San Matteo Gate, or Dulcisinfundo in Via degli Innocenti near the center, which also has live jazz music and panoramic views. A good way to combine all these pastimes and gastronomic delights is to sign up for a guided wine-tasting tour, taking in lunch outside the city followed by a walking tour of the main squares and a limousine home.

Finally, you may well want to rest and relax at the end of a long day, or stay overnight as a break in your journey from Florence to Rome as the ancient pilgrims did, and there are a number of good accommodation options for you to choose from, including rooms in villa-hotels, apartments in the historical centre, or bed and breakfast in farmhouses nearby, most of which retain the original fetaures of old buildings but completely refurbished to a high standard inside. For example, try Busini Rossi Carla, with its wonderfully restored rooms and apartments located in a back alley right in the center, or Il Girasole, a family-run farmhouse just 5kms away with a view back towards the city towers, where you can enjoy the local produce and wine, and which even comes complete with a swimming pool.

All in all, San Gimignano is an essential if brief part of a tour of Tuscany, where you should not fear to tread (as it was the setting for E. M. Forster’s novel of that name in 1905) and will not forget easily – not only for its strange and imposing towers, but because it is steeped in the history of poets and artists, their patrons and religious leaders from the time of our civilization’s re-birth

The former, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of Italy, is a three-day artisan fair with open-air workshops where it is possible to look at the strong and fascinating artisan’s works and discover their technical and artistic skills; the latter is The Fabbrica Europa Festival which aims to encourage the circulation of ideas and works exchange through new relationships between European and African people culture trough arts. For the summer months, among other events, we would like to highlight the Popular Dance Festival. This annual event is organized by the Florence Dance Center with the aim to create an open space for every kind of dance performance. During the event many international companies will be performing. This year the program counts on the presence of the New York City Ballet, the Flamenco Lunares and the Florence Dance Company, among others.

Who loves dance will be able to enjoy dance shows in the Florence’s charming open air venues such as Boboli Garden, Piazzale Michelangelo and Forte Belvedere. The hot dates are from 29 June to 1 August.

If you are visiting Florence on those days, make sure to book in advance as it is very high season, especially if you are on a budget and looking for cheap accommodation. You can consider a cheap accommodation in youth hostels, backpackers hostels or international students houses ( hostels as well) that will cost you around 25 euros per person for that period. In general, Florence youth hostels do not provide cool and trendy atmosphere as Florence can rather offer old style hostels, kind of student residences, or pilgrim residence as it was in old ages. You can have a try at the hostel Veneto right behind the Dome, or the Soggiorno Prestipino Hostel Residence just close to main train station, or the Armonia Hostel.

Remember Florence can be extremely hot and humid in summer and probably a very good option would be booking a caravan, a roulette or a big tent in a leafy, green Camping, on the hills. Try the Michelangelo that offer very good rates, swimming pool and pick up services.

If you wish to experience a traditional Florence hospitality you should go for a B&B, or family run guest houses ( pensioni or affittacamere in Italian) that are all around Florence. In the city centre Bandb (or bed and breakfast) usually have a superb view, and nice interiors. You can try the Abatjour B&B close to the train station, Soggiorno Primavera, the central BB Cinque Sensi, Althea rooms B&B, hotel Castri which is set in a Renascent villa with a green park, hotel Palazzuolo, hotel Guelfa, il Ghiro guest house, Cimarosa Armony BB, a Casa di Dante BB, bb tourist house, a Montebello BB. The prices are very good for the quality and the services they offer. Usually a double room costs around 60-70 euros per night.

So, get organized and be ready for a hot summer in Tuscany.

The Italian countryside with its charcoal hills and lush green valley’s has long been the backdrop to many an escapade in romantic fiction. Be it “Under a Tuscan Sun” or “A Room With A View”, the landscape of Italy has always been a main character in story. Like a beloved aunt or a quirky best friend, Italy plays her part. Even the word “romance” comes from the Italians. So when you’re picking that perfect place as your first adventure in your new life together, why not pick the most romantic spot on earth?

Rentals in Tuscany are beyond reasonably priced. A stone villa with a vineyard view and pool can go from $600 to $1300 a week depending upon season. An apartment or flat in Florence can be had for less than a hundred dollars a day. There is a honeymoon for any size and budget. It all depends upon your personal preferences. Do you enjoy the seaside, or are medieval villages more to your taste? Are you an artist? Perhaps, you’re a wine drinker? Whatever your pleasure, you will find it in Tuscany.

There are multiple home brokers to be found on the Internet, or you can choose to browse individual classified ads for rentals. Simply type in: rental, Italy, Tuscany and then refine from there. If you have the money for a luxury rental there are some amazing properties in Tuscany that are available for rent. Old castles and estates with Etruscan remains still standing. So many choices are available, and all of them will leave you with memories you will hold for a lifetime.
